Sloans Crossing Pond Walk

Overview

A short, flat loop (0.4–0.5 miles total) around a sinkhole-formed pond, this is one of the park’s easiest above-ground walks and a perfect leg-stretcher after cave tours. Expect a peaceful circuit with benches and occasional viewing platforms, plus interpretive signs that explain how a rare surface pond fits into the park’s karst landscape.

Trail Experience

The route is mostly wooden boardwalk with a few short gravel segments, winding through woods and along the pond margin. You won’t have sweeping views the entire way, but you’ll get frequent openings to scan the water for turtles, frogs, dragonflies, and birds. It’s an easy 15–20 minutes if you’re just walking; lingering for wildlife can easily stretch it longer. Ranger-led walks here (when offered) typically take about an hour and focus on the wetland ecosystem.

Accessibility and Amenities

The loop is designed to be accessible and generally level, with gentle grades, edge barriers or partial railings, passing spaces, resting pads, and benches. Note that the parking area is small; users have reported limited or no designated accessible spaces at times—verify current conditions if that matters for your group. There are picnic tables near the lot, but no restrooms or water at the trailhead; the nearest facilities are at the Visitor Center about 4 miles away.

Best Time to Walk

Year-round access means you can catch seasonal changes—spring choruses of frogs, summer dragonflies, autumn color, and quiet winter reflections. Wildlife is most active at dawn and near dusk. Bug spray is a smart move in warm months, and the boardwalk can be slick in rain.

Tips and Alternatives

Leashed pets are welcome on surface trails, but not in caves. There’s no fee to use this trail. If you want a similar quick-and-easy boardwalk experience with good wildlife viewing, consider the Echo River Springs Boardwalk or the Sinkhole Trail Loop near the visitor center. For river scenery, the River Styx Spring Trail is another short add-on.
