Ancient Groves

Short, quiet loop through mossy old-growth above the Sol Duc
Ancient Groves, Olympic National Park
InsideOlympic National Park

Overview

A half-mile-ish loop tucked off Sol Duc Hot Springs Road, Ancient Groves is all about mood: soaring Douglas-fir and western hemlock, floors carpeted in ferns, and moss hanging from everything. It’s the rainforest vibe without the crowds—a peaceful counterpoint to the swamped Sol Duc Falls trail up the road.

What You'll See

  • Old-growth lowland forest that feels primordial—nurse logs, snags, and a multi-layered canopy.
  • Short boardwalks over wet patches and a brief stretch along a bluff with peeks toward the Sol Duc River and a wide ravine.
  • Dense, emerald undergrowth that photographs beautifully on cloudy, damp days.

Trail Feel & Difficulty

Expect a short loop (about 0.5–0.6 miles) with frequent little ups and downs; a couple pitches are steeper than you’d think for such a tiny trail. The tread starts narrow and rustic. Surfaces can be slick after rain (which is often), especially on wood and roots. Keep an eye on kids near the bluff edge.

Why It’s Special

Only a small fraction of the region’s original lowland old-growth remains, and this pocket lets you experience that ecosystem up close—minus the bus-tour vibe. It’s underrated, contemplative, and ideal as a 15–30 minute forest immersion between bigger stops.

Wildlife

You’re more likely to hear wildlife than see it: songbirds flitting through the canopy, woodpeckers working snags, and the occasional small mammal rustling in the understory. The moist microhabitats teem with invertebrates.

Logistics

Look for a small roadside sign about 8.8 miles up Sol Duc Hot Springs Road; the turnout is immediately after the sign. The main trail begins at the far end of the parking area, briefly parallels the road, then drops into the woods. A secondary access exists farther down the road.

Best Time to Visit

  • Time of day: Early morning or late afternoon for solitude and soft light; midday sees the most pass-by traffic.
  • Day of week: Weekdays are typically quieter than weekends.
  • Conditions: Overcast or misty weather actually makes the forest glow and keeps glare off the greenery.

Is It Worth It?

If you love mossy, cathedral-like forest and a quiet vibe, absolutely. It’s a perfect add-on en route to Sol Duc Falls or the hot springs—low effort, high atmosphere.

Pros

  • Lush old-growth forest with moss-draped giants
  • Quiet alternative to busy Sol Duc Falls nearby
  • Short loop with boardwalks and bluff views of the Sol Duc River

Cons

  • Very limited roadside parking; easy to miss the small sign
  • Short but includes steep ups/downs and bluff edges; slick when wet

Tips

  • Watch for the small roadside sign; the turnout comes immediately after it.
  • If the main pullout is full, try the secondary access a bit farther down the road.
  • Wear grippy shoes—short, steep pitches and wet boardwalks can be slick.
  • Go early or late for moody light and fewer passersby; plan 15–30 minutes.
  • Leash pets; off-leash is not allowed on this trail.
