Overview

About Greenwich Interpretation Centre

Why stop

  • Engaging exhibits connect dune ecology with local history

Heads up

  • Seasonal centre with limited winter services
Greenwich sits at the easternmost section of the park, and this is the building that makes sense of it. The peninsula holds a rare and extensive coastal dune system, including unusually large, mobile parabolic dunes and the highest sand dunes in Prince Edward Island, along with wetlands and rare plant habitat. Walk out onto the sand without context and it is simply pretty; the exhibits here give you the background that makes the landscape readable before you head out to explore the dunes.

Before you go

Best time to go

The interpretation centre is seasonal. Park facilities here generally run from mid-May into early autumn, with the fullest services in July and August. In winter, visitor services and facilities at the building are closed or limited. The dunes, boardwalk, beach and trails are a separate outdoor setting with their own off-season conditions, and off-season site infrastructure is not maintained the same way. Check current opening details before you drive out.

Access and getting there

Accessibility applies to the centre building. The dunes, boardwalk, beach and trails are separate outdoor experiences, so plan those on their own terms.

  • Approach is via Wild Rose Road off Route 313
  • The centre is fully wheelchair accessible, with an accessible entrance and accessible parking, and includes a multipurpose room
  • Parking is on site, and visitors commonly note restrooms available here

There are over 20 exhibits covering the natural and cultural history of this specific place, and they include interactive activities:

The human story runs deep here, with Mi'kmaq and Acadian connections and archaeological evidence of people living in this shifting landscape for millennia. Visitors regularly single out the coastal, bird, fish and wildlife displays, and the staff, who are good at pointing you toward hikes and features worth seeing.

  • A Time Line tracing roughly 10,000 years of inhabitation, with artifacts found on site
  • Interactive activities including the Shell Game, Shorebird Challenge, and a Dune Plant quiz
  • A 3D in-floor model of the Greenwich Peninsula, St. Peters Bay and the surrounding area, useful for orienting yourself before heading out
  • A 12-minute multimedia presentation, "Wind, Sea and Sand, the story of Greenwich"
How it connects to the outdoorsThe centre is the interpretive gateway rather than the destination itself.

The centre is the interpretive gateway rather than the destination itself. Nearby are the dunes, the boardwalk and beach experience, and three hiking trails ranging from 1.25 km to 4.5 km, each with interpretive signs. Visitors often pair the indoor stop with the outdoor walk, doing the exhibits and film first, then heading out with a clearer idea of what they are looking at.

One honest drawbackThis is a compact educational stop rather than a full-day attraction on its own.

This is a compact educational stop rather than a full-day attraction on its own. Pair it with a nearby outdoor Greenwich experience, such as a trail or the shoreline, and the visit lands much better.
