Stanhope Cape Beach

Overview

About Stanhope Cape Beach

Why stop

  • A quieter, wilder-feeling shoreline than Stanhope Main
  • Surf, red rock, and open Gulf horizons

Heads up

  • Smaller, less-developed visitor offer than Stanhope Main
  • Dune access and exposed shore conditions can be awkward
This is the Cape access at the eastern end of the Stanhope shore, a separate beach entry from the larger Stanhope Beach Complex further west. It is more lightly developed, with a self-directed feel: you park, cross the dune on the marked access, and the beach is yours to figure out. Come for the open Gulf horizon rather than for a full day of facilities.

Park operations are seasonal. Most facilities run from mid-May into early autumn, with the fullest services in July and August and reduced services in the shoulder months. In winter, visitor services and facilities are closed and beach accesses are not maintained. The shore is exposed, so wind and water conditions can change quickly.

“Up ahead is Stanhope Cape Beach, a simpler shore stop than Stanhope Main. Wooden stairs cross the dunes to open sand and rounded red sandstone along the water. For a photo, frame those red stones against the Gulf.”

  • A low, open shoreline with wet tidal sand and stretches of rounded red sandstone rock along the foreshore
  • Open water and a broad ocean horizon, with dunes and shore trees framing the approach
  • Wilder-feeling than Stanhope Main, with less built structure around you
  • Good for walking the sand, watching the water, shore photography, and a simple picnic
Practical accessParking is provided in gravel areas near the beach access
  • Parking is provided in gravel areas near the beach access
  • A dune crossing leads from the parking area down to the beach; use it rather than making your own route
  • Facilities are basic: composting toilets and a kitchen shelter
  • Do not assume that the boardwalk, mobility, shower or supervised-swimming services of the separate Stanhope Beach Complex apply here. Check current beach-safety information before swimming, and bring water, shade and anything else you need

The parking and access sit within a fragile dune ecosystem that is vulnerable to coastal storms and erosion. Stay on the marked dune crossing and keep off dune vegetation. Respect all signs and fencing protecting Piping Plover nesting areas. The rocky foreshore is wet and uneven, so keep to the sand and watch your footing and the water conditions near the shore.

The visitor offer is genuinely limited compared with Stanhope Main, and the dune crossing plus exposed shore conditions can make access awkward for some visitors. If you want a serviced beach day, the main Stanhope complex is the better choice; if you want a quieter, more open stretch of coast, this one is worth the stop.
