Puohokamoa Falls Overlook

What it is

A tiny roadside pullout around mile 10.8–11 on the Road to Hana that lets you peek into a lush valley and, if foliage and flow cooperate, spot the dramatic Lower Puohokamoa Falls. The smaller Upper Puohokamoa Falls sits across the road. It’s a true pull-over-and-look stop—no frills, no amenities.

Why stop here

Lower Puohokamoa is one of the taller, more hidden waterfalls along the drive. When it’s running strong after rain, it’s a striking ribbon dropping through dense rainforest. Many drivers breeze past without noticing, so it often feels quieter than the headline stops.

What to expect

• From the pullout you’re looking across a jungle gorge; the lower falls may be partially obscured by vegetation depending on the season and growth.
• Access to bases and pools has a history of restrictions and safety concerns—don’t count on getting down there from the roadside. Respect all signs and fences.
• If you want a sure view, the nearby Garden of Eden Arboretum (paid) offers vantage points of the falls.

Safety notes

The terrain to the base is steep and hazardous, and access may be closed or on private land. Skip the scramble. Also avoid freshwater immersion here due to leptospirosis risk.

Is it worth your time?

Yes—if you’re already driving the road and the water is flowing. It’s a quick, low-effort pause that can deliver a big-waterfall payoff. If it’s dry or the view is blocked, don’t linger; there are plenty of other stops ahead.

Best time to visit

There are no hours—it’s a roadside overlook. The falls look best after recent rain, and this spot rarely gets truly crowded. Because visibility depends on foliage, any time of day works; just pull over safely when traffic allows.
