Kaumahina Wayside Loop Trail

This is a short, easy loop in Kaumahina State Wayside Park along the Road to Hāna, best used as a scenic reset rather than a destination hike. Expect a gentle nature walk through lush, wet-side Maui forest with multiple coastline lookouts and shaded picnic tables. It’s ideal for stretching your legs, grabbing a snack, and soaking up views before tackling more of the highway.

Plan on roughly 0.5 miles total for the loop options (10–30 minutes, depending on which paths you choose). Elevation gain is minimal, but the paths can feel humid and steamy. The draw here is the setting: a dense, tropical rainforest vibe with bursts of blue Pacific and rugged sea cliffs below. Keep an ear out for birds; this is a nice spot for casual birdwatching.

It’s an easy walk suitable for most visitors. Surfaces are well-maintained but can be slick after rain (common on this side of the island), and mosquitoes can be active—bug spray helps. Don’t expect a wilderness experience or solitude; this is a popular rest stop along a famous drive.

Amenities are the big perk: there’s parking, shaded picnic tables, and—crucially for this drive—restrooms. If you’re tight on time, prioritize the overlook spurs for the best ocean views (including toward the Ke‘anae area) and skip the longer loop meanders.

Best time to hike: year‑round. Go early in the day to beat the midday tour-bus swell and to snag parking. Cloudy or misty weather adds to the rainforest mood, but bring a light layer and protect your camera/phone. Photography is best when the coast isn’t backlit—morning tends to be kindest for color and contrast.
