Overview
Campamento Italiano is a CONAF checkpoint and day-use rest stop tucked beside the Río del Francés. It sits at the base of the French Valley on the W Trek, making it the natural place to shed your main pack before tackling the steep forested climb to the viewpoints. As of the 2025 season, it’s closed to camping—think ranger station and pit stop, not a place to sleep.

Hiking from Here (typical times)
- Paine Grande → Italiano: 2–2.5 hours.
- Italiano → Mirador Francés: about 1.5 hours on a steeper, rooty trail.
- Optional: Continue beyond Mirador Francés toward Británico; add roughly 2–3 hours round trip from the first viewpoint. Set a firm turnaround time and confirm the day’s cutoff with rangers.
How to Use It Smartly
Drop the big pack at Italiano, carry a day kit up the valley, then return to collect your gear and continue east to Domo Francés (about 30–60 minutes) or further to Los Cuernos. Keep valuables with you or secured; the pack area is informal and unattended.
Wildlife
Along the river and in the surrounding forest, keep an eye out for torrent ducks, Magellanic woodpeckers, owls, and the occasional fox. Condors are more likely over open slopes. Dawn and dusk are most active—observe quietly and never feed wildlife.

Start early. Summer brings strong winds and crowd pressure, and rangers enforce afternoon cutoffs (often mid‑afternoon) for the upper valley. Clear mornings give your best odds for views and photos; expect rapidly changing weather any time of year.
Nearby Overnight Options
Plan to sleep elsewhere: Domo/Camping Francés is roughly 30–60 minutes east, with hot showers and paid meals. Paine Grande to the west has a large kitchen/dining building and modern bathrooms. Italiano remains day-use only.
