Overview
This is the western arm of the famed W trek and one of the park’s most rewarding day hikes: Paine Grande to Refugio Grey with a short spur to the main Grey Glacier viewpoint. Expect big mileage and bigger winds, but also an amphitheater of ice, peaks, and Lago Grey’s floating bergs. Total distance is roughly 14.2 miles/24 km round trip to the glacier viewpoint, typically 3–4 hours each way in normal conditions.
Route and Highlights
From Paine Grande the trail climbs steadily for about 3 km to Laguna de los Patos, then rolls along ridges with constant views of Cerro Paine Grande and Lago Grey. Mirador Lago Grey (about 1 km before Refugio Grey) is your first full sweep of the lake, icebergs, and the glacier—an excellent turnaround if you’re tight on time. Continue to Refugio Grey and add the short 10–15 minute spur to Mirador Glaciar Grey for the money shot. Grey is a fast-moving river of ice with three massive tongues and blue cliffs over 100 feet high—watch for calving and drifting bergs. Elevation changes are generally gradual with a few steeper pops, and footing can feel slower when the wind kicks up.
Logistics that Make or Break the Day
Access is by catamaran across Lago Pehoé from Pudeto to Paine Grande. Typical morning crossings run around 8:30 and 10:30, with the last return from Paine Grande commonly near 18:40. To comfortably catch that last boat, aim to reach Refugio Grey by about 14:30; the trail back toward Paine Grande is theoretically “closed” from Refugio Grey around 15:00 for same‑day hikers, though this isn’t strictly enforced. If you prefer less time pressure, combine the Pehoé catamaran one way with the Grey Navigation ferry between Refugio Grey and Hotel Lago Grey the other way. Buses from Puerto Natales commonly stop at Pudeto and at Hotel Lago Grey.
Best Time to Hike
Prime season is October through April. Winds are a constant wildcard here—expect strong gusts that can slow your pace and occasionally delay boats. Start early, and if you took the second morning catamaran, keep breaks short on the way out; if you’re behind schedule by Mirador Lago Grey, that’s a sensible turnaround with still-great views.
Tips, Gear, and Safety Net
Layer for rapid weather changes (windproof, waterproof) and bring solid hiking boots. Carry plenty of snacks and 1.5–2 L of water; you can resupply at refugios. Trekking poles help on the rollers when it’s gusty. If you miss the last catamaran, Paine Grande rents tent/mat/sleeping bag and has a restaurant/bar; Refugio Grey also offers accommodations but can fill in peak season.
Optional Add‑Ons
If you caught the earliest boat and move efficiently, consider pushing a bit past Refugio Grey toward the suspension bridges for lofty glacier views. With extra time and budget on a different day, the area also offers a glacier boat trip, guided ice hiking with crampons, and kayaking among the icebergs.
