French Valley

Overview

The French Valley is the middle spur of the classic W trek, usually tackled on day 2 or 3 of a 4–5 day itinerary. Most hikers treat it as an out‑and‑back side trip from the main lakeshore track, then continue on to stay at Francés/Los Cuernos or Paine Grande.

How to Hike It

• West→east: Ferry to Paine Grande, overnight there, then hike to Campamento Italiano, leave your pack, ascend the valley, return to collect it, and continue to Francés or Los Cuernos.
• East→west: Overnight near Los Cuernos/Francés, do the valley as an out‑and‑back via Italiano, then continue toward Paine Grande.
• Timing note: From Paine Grande it’s roughly 7.5 km (about 2–2.5 hours) to Italiano on an easier trail before the steeper valley climb. If you’re day‑hiking from Paine Grande, keep an eye on the last catamaran across Lago Pehoé.

Difficulty & Fitness

Expect one of the steeper sections of the W here. The overall W is manageable for hikers comfortable doing up to ~18 km/11 miles on consecutive days, but the pack‑drop trick at Italiano or your campsite makes a big difference on the ascent.

Services & Facilities You’ll Actually Use

• Francés Sector: Bathrooms with hot showers, Wi‑Fi, and a coffee shop offering snacks and drinks. Multiple camping setups are available (book ahead).
• Campamento Italiano (CONAF): Very basic—pit toilets and a small shelter, no food sales. It’s the go‑to place to leave your heavy pack before heading up the valley.
• On trail: No shops between camps. Refill water at established facilities like Francés; treat stream water if you take it on the go.

Essential Logistics

• Season: Open year‑round. Self‑guided trekking is allowed October–April; a guide is required May–September.
• Park entry: Buy tickets online in advance and download your QR code in Puerto Natales; you may be asked for your passport.
• Getting there: Common approach is bus Puerto Natales → Pudeto, then the Pudeto–Paine Grande ferry to access this central/western section of the W.
• Sample costs (2025/26 season): Return bus ~CLP 18,000; Pudeto → Paine Grande ferry (one‑way) ~CLP 42,600; entry fees up to 3 days ~CLP 32,400 (adult) and over 3 days ~CLP 46,200. A recent independent W budget example came to ~CLP 228,500 per person plus food.
• Reservations: You must have a reservation for every night (campgrounds or refugio dorms). Example per‑person campsite prices: Grey ~CLP 11,700; Paine Grande ~CLP 13,700; Francés ~CLP 49,000; El Chileno ~CLP 49,000. The free Torres Ranger Station campsite remains closed.

Safety & Weather

Start early to maximize your weather window and set a clear turnaround time. Expect strong wind and rapid changes—carry layers and a headlamp. Trails are well marked and popular, but there’s no mobile signal, so keep a map/itinerary and watch conditions.

Best Time to Visit

October–April is best for self‑guided hikers. Begin at first light to beat the busiest hours and give yourself time for the climb and return. If you’re linking this with the ferry or a point‑to‑point day, plan around the last catamaran from Paine Grande.
