“Mirador Lago Sarmiento is coming up, a quick roadside stop for the lake and the Paine massif without a hike. The Towers can disappear into cloud, but the broad stretch of water is still the point of this stop.”

More about Mirador Lago Sarmiento

A quick roadside stopThis is a pull-off on Y-150 above Lago Sarmiento, with the Paine massif across the water.

This is a pull-off on Y-150 above Lago Sarmiento, with the Paine massif across the water. It’s an easy break on the drive into the park’s eastern sector, with a broad lake view and no hike. Make the Towers a bonus rather than a sure thing: cloud can hide them, and the exposed stop is often windy enough to make loose gear a nuisance.

Frame the lakeA roadside shelter has a square opening that makes a simple frame for the water and mountains.

A roadside shelter has a square opening that makes a simple frame for the water and mountains. Reflections are less dependable here than at sheltered Laguna Amarga; Sarmiento is broader and more exposed.

The older lake storyLago Sarmiento covers about 86 square kilometres.

Lago Sarmiento covers about 86 square kilometres. It lies in a landscape shaped by the much larger Great Tehuelche Paleolake, a proglacial lake fed by meltwater during the last glacial maximum and drained roughly 7,100 years ago when an ice barrier melted. Moraines and old shorelines around the park are reminders of that earlier water system.
