Overview
Steps from the Old Faithful boardwalks, this 1921 Charles Hamilton–built station is the convenient, no‑frills fuel stop in the Old Faithful Historic District. It’s the “Lower” station because it sits lower on the terrain than Hamilton’s other Old Faithful station. Architecturally, it’s a modified T‑plan with half‑timbers and a wood‑shingled roof that once sheltered the pumps—classic parkitecture in a very practical package.
What it offers
- Fuel: Unleaded and diesel #2.
- Pumps: Operate 24/7 by credit card during the operating season; call buttons at the pumps summon assistance when staffed.
- Inside: Grab‑and‑go snacks, drinks, and ice.
- Staffing: Daylight hours only, in season.
Season and hours (2025)
Gas is available May 23–September 14. Outside these dates, don’t count on fuel here. During the season, the store is staffed in daylight hours, but you can self‑serve at the pumps around the clock.
Lower vs. Upper station
If you just need fuel and a cold drink, the Lower station is the quick stop. If you need more—repairs, towing, or propane—the Upper Gas & Service Station up the hill is the one with those services and a longer season.
Best time to stop
Midday sees the heaviest traffic in Old Faithful village, especially early afternoon; mornings and later afternoons are noticeably easier for quick in‑and‑out fuel stops. Aim before 10 am or after 4 pm to minimize waits, and avoid the spike that coincides with peak eruption‑watching crowds.
Handy to know
There’s an assistance line for the Old Faithful stations (406‑848‑7548). For broader area info and day‑of conditions, the Old Faithful Visitor Education Center can point you to what’s open nearby.
