Overview

Built in 1999, Old Faithful Snow Lodge is the park’s newest full‑service lodge, blending warm timber “parkitecture” with a practical, modern setup. You’re here for location: it’s a short walk to Old Faithful and the Upper Geyser Basin boardwalks, with a cozy lobby, fireplaces, and a lounge/bar to unwind after geyser-chasing.

Rooms & Cabins

Pick from lodge rooms or two cabin types. Deluxe Lodge Rooms have 1 king or 2 queens and the usual comforts (coffee maker, mini‑fridge, heat), while Western Cabins (2 queens) and Frontier Cabins (2 doubles, shower‑only) give you a more independent feel. All Snow Lodge rooms and cabins have private bathrooms; none have A/C, TVs, or radios. Select cabins are pet‑friendly for a fee. Expect a quiet, unplugged vibe—phones are in most lodge rooms, not in cabins. Wi‑Fi exists but can be intermittent.

Dining & Supplies

Onsite you’ve got the Obsidian Dining Room (full‑service) and the Geyser Grill (quick‑serve). There’s also the Bear Den Gift Store for souvenirs and basics, plus guest laundry. Lines can swell at mealtimes in peak season, so aim off‑peak or bring snacks.

Seasonality & Access

It runs summer and winter seasons. In winter, you can only reach Old Faithful by commercially operated snowcoach or snowmobile, and weather can delay or cancel in‑park transport. A winter airport shuttle operates to/from Mammoth Hot Springs; book all winter logistics early.

What’s Nearby

You’re 0.2 miles from the Upper Geyser Basin, with predicted headliners like Castle, Grand, Daisy, and Riverside. Midway Geyser Basin and Grand Prismatic Spring are roughly 4.6 miles away, with Black Sand Basin and Kepler Cascades close by. It’s an easy base for a full day on the boardwalks without moving your car.

Winter Fun

Winter is prime for snowshoeing and cross‑country skiing through steamy basins. The Snow Lodge supports the season with ski/snowshoe rentals, lessons, and tours, and even a small outdoor skating rink with free skate loans. It’s a distinctly different, quieter Yellowstone.

Geyser Timing From Your Doorstep

Old Faithful’s median interval hovers around 102 minutes (give or take). Grab prediction boards at the Old Faithful Visitor Education Center or in the lodges, and chain together a walking loop that catches Old Faithful plus predicted windows for Castle, Grand, Daisy, and Riverside. Always stay on boardwalks; the ground is thin and water near‑boiling.

Wildlife Note

Spring often brings baby animals in the area. Enjoy from a distance and give all wildlife a wide berth.

Best Time to Visit

• Early morning or after dinner: fewer crowds and softer light for photos around Old Faithful. Midday is heaviest.
• Midweek typically breathes a little easier than weekends in peak summer.
• In hot spells, top‑floor lodge rooms can feel stuffy without A/C—consider cabins or lower floors.
