Cauldron Falls at West Burton

Overview

About Cauldron Falls

Why stop

  • Wooded waterfall and plunge pool

Heads up

  • Uneven, slippery rocks around the water
This is a modest waterfall with a peaceful, picturesque setting, and it gives you a lot of scenery for very little effort, with a pretty village at the top of the path. It slots easily into a drive through Wensleydale, or works as the opening stretch of a longer walk.

Plan your stop

Before you go

Best time to go

A weekday or early morning visit gives you the quietest conditions and softer light for photographs, since deep shade and bright water are a tricky combination in harsh midday sun. Wetter spells generally mean a livelier fall, though flow varies and a dry stretch can leave it gentle. If you are visiting for photography, the surrounding trees can add colour at quieter times of year.

Getting there

Head for West Burton, near Leyburn, and start from the village green. The walk down to the falls is short and straightforward, following the beck. Footpaths from the village also climb onto the fellside, so you can extend the visit into a longer walk over the tops instead of simply retracing your steps.

A short, easy walk from West Burton's village green leads to a shady spot where the beck steps down into a small waterfall and a plunge pool. The remains of the old mill sit beside the water, a reminder that this was a working corner of the village. Turner painted here, which tells you something about how the setting frames the falls.

Practical tipsParking is the main headache.
  • Parking is the main headache. There is some street parking around the village, but it is limited and fills quickly on fine weekends. Park considerately, leave access clear for residents, and be prepared to walk in from further out.
  • Wear proper shoes. The ground and stones near the water are uneven, and the rocks stay wet and slippery in the shade even after dry spells.
  • Take care on the wet stones near the pool, and keep children and dogs under close supervision on the uneven ground.
  • Treat facilities as unconfirmed and plan accordingly: don't count on toilets, water, or step-free access to the waterside.

The waterfall is small, the approach is very brief, and on a sunny weekend afternoon you will be sharing the spot with others. Parking pressure and slippery stones are the two things most likely to spoil a visit. If you want solitude and more scale, treat the falls as a starting point and keep walking up onto the fell.

Why it's worth the detourBring binoculars if you have them.

Bring binoculars if you have them. The beck is good for dippers, stocky white-breasted birds that bob on midstream rocks, and wagtails flicking about after insects along the water's edge.
