Overview

Beech Cliff towers over Echo Lake on the quieter west side of the island, serving up a short, punchy dose of adventure: iron ladders on near-vertical granite, cliff-edge outlooks, and a breezy loop atop the rim. It’s the park’s ladder experience without the east-side crowds.

The Hike & Route Options

Most hikers start at Echo Lake Beach and pick up the Beech Cliff Trail at the far right end of the lot to tackle the ladders on the ascent (much better than downclimbing). At the top, the Beech Cliff Loop strings together several viewpoints. A popular way back is via the gentler Canada Cliffs Trail, making a satisfying loop.

What You’ll See

From ledges above Echo Lake, the views widen toward Beech Mountain, Somes Sound, and the open Atlantic. Clear days can reveal the Cranberry Islands. It’s classic Acadia granite—sheer faces, blocky steps, and airy perches—and you’ll look straight down on the lake and its sandy beach.

Difficulty, Safety, and Closures

The ladders are exposed; three points of contact and calm footing are the name of the game. Skip this in wet or icy conditions. Seasonal peregrine falcon nesting can close sections—check park alerts before you go. Dogs aren’t permitted on this ladder route.

History & Geology

The trail’s ladder-assisted character and cliff-top loop reflect 1930s-era CCC trailbuilding, threading safe passage through steep, glacier-sculpted granite ledges while preserving the drama of the face.

Pair It With Echo Lake

Finish the loop and drop to Echo Lake Beach for a cool-down swim or sand-time—handy when you want a hike-and-swim combo in one spot.

Best Time to Visit

Early morning or late afternoon: softer light on Echo Lake and fewer people at the beach lot.
Shoulder season (late spring/fall): lighter crowds, but verify falcon-related closures in spring.
Midday in peak summer: expect busier parking; consider the Island Explorer shuttle.

Wildlife

Cliff habitat here occasionally hosts nesting peregrine falcons. Bring binoculars and keep distance if closures or raptor activity are posted.
