Overview
Echo Lake Beach is the park’s go-to freshwater swim spot—warmer than the ocean and ringed by cliffs and forest. It’s a compact beach on the south end of Echo Lake right off Route 102, with calm, clear water and mountain backdrops like Beech Mountain and Acadia Mountain.
Why it’s special
If you want to actually swim, this is the move. Summer water can hit around 70°F, and the entry stays shallow for a long distance—parents love it. You also get the scenery: granite cliffs rising on the west shore and trails nearby if you want to pair a dip with a hike.

Expect clear, calm water, a small sandy/pebbly strand, and big cliff views. Lifeguards are typically on duty from Memorial Day to Labor Day. It’s popular with locals and visitors, so on warm weekends it feels lively.
Amenities and access
There’s a dedicated parking lot, restrooms, changing rooms, and a rinse faucet. The Island Explorer shuttle serves the area, which is a smart backup when the lot fills. Small craft can launch at Ikes Point along Route 102; larger motors are restricted to keep things quiet.
Wildlife
In and around the lake you might spot brook trout, frogs and tadpoles near the shallows, plus common woodland birds and chipmunks in the surrounding forest. Nothing exotic—just classic Maine lake life.
Pair it with a hike
Trails in the area lead up Beech Mountain and along the cliffs above the lake for wide views. A quick swim after a morning hike is a crowd favorite.
