Echo Lake Beach

Echo Lake Beach is a small sandy freshwater swimming beach at the south end of Echo Lake, off Route 102 on Mount Desert Island’s west side. The marked swimming area sits below the wooded Beech Cliff across the water. I’d stop for a lake swim and the close cliff view; if you want a wide stretch of sand, this little beach won’t give you much room. Summer days can get busy, so arriving early gives you a better chance at easy parking.

The main lot is off Route 102. A short paved path slopes down to changing rooms, accessible restrooms, drinking fountains and a foot-rinse station; a wooden boardwalk crosses the sand. The lot has five accessible spaces, and a beach wheelchair can be requested at least five days ahead. Picnic tables sit near the beach. Parking requires an Acadia or other valid national park entrance pass during the May–October fee season; swimming itself has no separate fee.

From the water’s edge, frame the lake with Beech Cliff rising across it. On a still day, the cliff can reflect on the surface; the sandy curve also makes a clear foreground for the wooded slope. The beach itself is a short walk from the lot, so you don’t need a hike for the lake-level view.

For a longer outing, the Beech Cliff Trail starts at the far end of the parking area. It’s a short but strenuous climb over granite ledges, with four iron ladders and an overlook about 480 feet above the lake. From there you can look back down at the beach and across to the Cranberry Islands and nearby peaks. The trail is not accessible; its rough footing and ladders make it a different outing from the beach’s paved approach.
