Route snapshot
Most hikers start at the Echo Lake parking area off ME‑102 and ascend the Beech Cliff Trail’s four iron ladders to reach the rim. At the top, the Beech Cliff Loop itself is about 0.4 miles, meandering across open granite with big, airy viewpoints. For the descent, skip down‑climbing the ladders and take the Canada Cliffs Trail back through quiet mixed forest to the lot. Total distance for this circuit (Beech Cliff Trail up + Beech Cliff Loop + Canada Cliffs down) is roughly 1.5 miles.
What you’ll see
Expect classic Acadia granite underfoot, sheer cliff edges, and a constant reel of views: Echo Lake far below, the east side of Mount Desert Island, the tip of Somes Sound, and on clear days, the Cranberry Islands and open Atlantic. The loop’s exposed ledges keep the vistas coming; the Canada Cliffs descent trades drama for a peaceful woodland walk.
Know before you go
This is short but steep and exposed. The ladders are secure, but you need a head for heights and solid footing. Always ascend the ladders and descend via Canada Cliffs—don’t try to down‑climb when others are coming up. The granite gets slick when wet, and icy conditions make this route unsafe. Dogs are not allowed on this ladder trail, and park entrance fees apply. In season, consider using the Island Explorer bus to avoid parking hassles at Echo Lake.
Best time to hike
Late spring through fall offers the safest conditions and best footing. Summer brings crowds to Echo Lake Beach, but the trail itself is usually quieter than the park’s east‑side hotspots. Aim for early morning or late afternoon for easier parking and softer, photogenic light on the cliffs.
