Beech Mountain Loop Trail

Why hike it

A quick, rewarding loop on Acadia’s quieter west side, the Beech Mountain Loop packs lake-and-mountain views, classic granite ledges, and a historic fire tower into about 1.2 miles total. Expect a moderate workout with roughly 360 feet of gain—enough to earn the vistas without burning your whole morning.

What to expect

The trail climbs through shady mixed forest on dirt and roots before breaking onto open granite near the summit. Views stretch over Long Pond to the west and Echo Lake toward the east, with broader Mount Desert Island ridges—and on clear days, ocean—beyond. The footing can be rocky and slick when wet. There’s a historic fire tower at the high point; it’s a landmark even when closed, and is reported to open seasonally for extra panorama.

Route tips

Hike the loop in either direction. For a gentler climb, go clockwise (stay right at the first junction) and descend the steeper, more direct side. If you want more mileage or different scenery, many hikers mix in the South Ridge segment to round out the loop. Strong hikers can optionally link nearby Beech Cliff trails for bigger Echo Lake views—note those ladders are a separate route and do not allow dogs.

Best time to go

Spring and fall bring cooler temps and thinner crowds, with fall foliage lighting up the views. Summer has the steadiest weather and the best shot at climbing the tower, but arrive early to beat parking pressure. Fog is common on MDI; aim for clear mornings if views are the goal. The loop is open year‑round, but winter conditions can be icy—bring traction.

Nature notes

Watch for songbird activity in the forested stretches and keep an eye on the glacially carved granite slabs near the top—classic Acadia geology on display. Peregrine falcons sometimes nest on nearby cliffs; seasonal closures can affect adjacent ladder routes. Check the park website for current advisories.

Logistics

Start from the Beech Mountain parking area at the end of Beech Hill Road, just west of Long Pond. The lot is modest and can fill in peak season; restrooms have been reported at/near the trailhead. Dogs are allowed on leash on this loop (not on the Beech Cliff ladders). No special hiking permit is required, but a park entrance pass is.
