Overview
Perched on the 839–840 ft summit of Beech Mountain, this historic fire tower caps one of the West Side’s most rewarding short hikes. It’s the only remaining fire lookout in the park—a steel tower (1962) replacing the original 1941 CCC structure—and it tells a real story of Acadia’s fire management history.
Why Go
Even if the tower cab is closed (it usually is), the lower stairs and nearby ledges deliver big views over Echo Lake to the east, Long Pond to the west, and a sweep of surrounding peaks. It’s a local favorite for sunrise, sunset, and fall foliage, with fewer crowds than the Park Loop Road hotspots.
Trails and Difficulty
Well-marked loop options leave from the Beech Mountain parking area at the end of Beech Hill Road. Expect a moderate effort with rocky footing and short steep grades. One popular strategy: hike the loop clockwise so the descent reveals the Long Pond panorama. If you want more, you can link routes toward Beech Cliffs/Canada Cliffs for added scenery.
History Snapshot
The original wooden tower went up in 1941 and later played a role during the devastating 1947 fire. The current steel tower arrived in 1962 and was staffed until 1976. Today it stands as a photogenic landmark and a tangible piece of the park’s past.
Scenery and Wildlife
From the summit ledges and tower steps, you’ll look across lakes, ridges, and the island’s southwest. Forested approaches make this a pleasant, shaded hike in summer. Birders note good chances to spot common woodland species along the way.
Practicalities
There are no services at the trailhead or summit—no restrooms, water, or picnic tables—so come self-sufficient. The lot can fill quickly in peak season and on weekends. At the trailhead, multiple paths radiate in different directions; check signs so you start on your intended route. Don’t count on climbing into the tower cab; enjoy the first flight and the surrounding granite ledges instead.
