Cadillac Cliffs is the spicy detour off the Gorham Mountain Trail along Park Loop Road, near Boulder Beach and Thunder Hole. It’s a compact burst of adventure: granite walls, tight passages, and a cave‑like squeeze that feels worlds away from Acadia’s smoother paths.
This side trail is about 0.3 miles long with roughly 190 feet of gain and 60 feet of loss—short, but it earns every step. Expect rugged footing, some rock scrambling, and a few iron rungs and historic stone steps. It’s not ideal for small kids or anyone uneasy with heights or uneven terrain. Wayfinding is straightforward; the spur is signed and rejoins the Gorham Mountain Trail.
The cliffs are classic Acadia granite—glacially smoothed ledges that were once beneath the sea. The sea cave and sculpted overhangs speak to a time when waves did the carving. The mix of hand‑laid stone steps and hardware reflects Acadia’s historic trail‑building era, adding character to the scrambly terrain.
No marquee wildlife here, but keep an eye and ear out for songbirds, plus the usual chipmunks and squirrels. Deer or a passing fox occasionally show up in this area.
There are no facilities at Cadillac Cliffs—no parking, restrooms, or water. Start from the Gorham Mountain Trailhead on Park Loop Road. Footwear with real grip matters; granite turns slick after rain or in fog. This spur is popular and can be heavily trafficked in peak season.
Hit it early in the morning or on weekdays to avoid crowding in the narrow sections. Skip the cliffs after rain; the stone gets treacherous when wet.
