Thunder Hole

Thunder Hole is a small inlet cut into Mount Desert Island’s rocky eastern shore, where waves funnel through a narrow cleft and force air out with a hollow boom. Sometimes the surge sends spray over the rocks. It’s a signature Park Loop Road stop, but the sound depends on sea conditions. I’d stop for the coastline even if it stays quiet.

The best odds of hearing the roar are about one to two hours before high tide, but that’s a better bet, not a guarantee. The inlet can stay quiet inside that window and send up spray at other times; tide and broader sea conditions both matter. If the sound is your main reason for stopping, leave room for a quiet visit.

The upper viewing deck is wheelchair accessible from the road. The lower viewing area takes 55 steps down and isn’t wheelchair accessible. Stairs and decks can be wet and slippery, especially in winter. Even calm weather doesn’t rule out rogue waves washing over the granite ledges, so stay on the built walkways.

The upright rock formation gives you an easy anchor for a photo. From the upper deck, look east toward Sand Beach or west toward Otter Point for more of the coast. For a closer view, include the narrow opening and its granite sides so the water has a sense of scale. Don’t step onto the ledges to chase spray; it’s variable, and waves can reach them suddenly.

There’s a parking lot, public restrooms, interpretive exhibits, and a gift shop with snacks, souvenirs, and books. It’s useful for a snack, not a meal. The Island Explorer stops near the lot entrance, and the Ocean Path also reaches Thunder Hole. The lot is just under two miles along Park Loop Road from Sand Beach.

By 1867, the inlet was known as both Thunder Hole and Thunder Cave, and visitors already knew the boom depended on wind and tide. Local groups built paths to the site in the early 1900s; Park Loop Road arrived in the 1930s.

A 1934 Works Progress Administration crew built a small ranger station here in the National Park Service’s rustic style. It later became a concession gift shop. The lower walkway was rebuilt in 1992–93, and the Thunder Hole area is listed on the National Register of Historic Places for its rustic design and New Deal-era history.
