Sand Beach

Overview

A compact, 290-yard strand tucked into a cliff-backed cove, Sand Beach is Acadia’s postcard shoreline—golden shell-sand, pounding Atlantic surf, and mountains rising just inland. It’s right off Park Loop Road and easy to pair with nearby must-sees.

Why it’s special

Most Maine coastlines are rocky; this one is a true anomaly. The “sand” is mostly crushed shells ground by relentless surf over thousands of years. The setting—Great Head on one side, the Beehive above, and long Atlantic views—makes it one of the park’s most photogenic stops.

Swimming and conditions

This is the park’s designated ocean swimming beach, but brace yourself: the water rarely tops 55°F/13°C in summer. Wading is popular; hardy swimmers keep it short. Lifeguards are typically on duty from Memorial Day to Labor Day.

Trails from the beach

Sand Beach doubles as a trail hub. Ocean Path starts here and traces the dramatic shore past Thunder Hole to Otter Cliff. You can also reach the Beehive and Great Head for quick, view-packed hikes. Expect stairs between the beach and the upper parking area.

Wildlife and night skies

Look for seabirds cruising the cove and tidepool life along the rocky edges. On calm, dark nights, stargazing can be excellent, with the Milky Way visible and occasional bioluminescent sparkle in the surf.

Facilities and rules

You’ll find restrooms and changing rooms just above the beach. There are no concessions, stores, or picnic tables. No camping or overnight parking. Pets are not allowed on the beach from mid-June to early September.

Best time to visit

Summer days get slammed—lots and parking often fill early. Aim for early morning (before 9 am) or late afternoon/early evening for an easier visit and softer light. After dusk, it’s a serene spot for stargazing when conditions are clear.
