Pemetic Mountain

Overview

Rising to about 1,248 feet between Jordan Pond and Bubble Pond, Pemetic Mountain delivers wide‑open, all‑directions views from classic Acadia granite. It’s one of the park’s major peaks, with a long, exposed north–south ridge and sightlines to The Bubbles, Eagle Lake, Penobscot and Sargent, plus out to the ocean.

Why it stands out

Pemetic pairs a big, airy summit with fewer crowds than Cadillac. The terrain is varied—open slabs, ledges, and some scrambly sections—and the ridge walk is a highlight if you like continuous views instead of a single lookout.

Trails and difficulty

There are four main routes: Northwest, South Ridge, East Cliffs, and North Ridge. The Pemetic Mountain Loop (about 2.4 miles) is short but strenuous due to steady grades and rocky footing. The Northwest Trail is the toughest—expect sharp rocks, a ravine/ledge split, and two ladders—better taken uphill than down. The South Ridge is more gradual and a favorite descent for a friendlier loop.

Access and logistics

Approaches cluster around Park Loop Road near Jordan Pond. Parking can be tight at Bubbles Divide and popular lots around Jordan Pond; arrive early or use the Island Explorer shuttle. Trails are marked with Acadia’s signature cairns—follow them closely at junctions.

Views, landscape, and geology

Pemetic’s upper mountain is open granite shaped by glacial history—broad slabs, erratics, and ledges. From the top you’ll look straight down on Jordan Pond, across to Penobscot and Sargent, and out toward the Cranberry Isles and Atlantic.

Wildlife

Sources don’t cite standout wildlife here; expect the usual park suspects in forested lower slopes and around the open summit (songbirds and small mammals are common in the area).

Safety and preparation

Rock can be slick after rain or even morning dew—especially on the Northwest route. Trekking poles help on the uneven granite. Sun exposure is real on the ridge; bring plenty of water and sun protection.

Best time to visit

Start early to secure parking and enjoy quieter trails and cooler temps. Clear, breezy days make the views pop, but avoid high winds if you don’t love exposure. Late afternoon can soften the light on Jordan Pond and the surrounding peaks, though lots are still busy in peak season.

A note on the name

“Pemetic” is a Wabanaki term historically used for the whole island, often translated as “sloping land.”
