Bubble Rock

Overview

Bubble Rock is Acadia’s celebrity boulder: a massive glacial erratic seemingly teetering on the brink of South Bubble. It’s the kind of sight that makes even seasoned hikers stop and grin. The payoff is big—sweeping views over Jordan Pond and nearby peaks—for a relatively short, moderate climb.

What Makes It Unique

This 100‑ton white granite boulder was carried here by glaciers from the Lucerne area, far from the pink granite it rests on. That contrast—and its precarious perch—tells a vivid story of Ice Age power. There’s also an official NPS interpretive wayside called “Well‑Traveled Boulder” along Park Loop Road that explains the geology.

The Hike

Most people start at the Bubbles Parking Lot on Park Loop Road and head up Bubbles Divide to South Bubble. Expect a short but steady ascent with rocky steps and a brief, slightly scrambly finish near the top. It’s commonly done as an out‑and‑back to Bubble Rock or as a longer loop that can include North Bubble or a descent toward Jordan Pond.

Views & Vibe

From the South Bubble area, you’ll get classic Acadia vistas of Jordan Pond, with Eagle Lake and surrounding mountains in the mix. The summit is exposed—great for wide‑open photography and breezes. It’s popular for good reason, so don’t expect solitude during peak season.

Wildlife

This isn’t a wildlife hotspot, but keep an eye out for songbirds, chipmunks, squirrels, and occasional raptors cruising the cliffs.

Best Time to Visit

• Timing: Arrive early or go late afternoon to dodge the parking crunch and crowds.
• Light: Early morning and late‑day light are best for photos; midday can be harsh.
• Season: Fall foliage brings gorgeous color and often friendlier parking.

Practicalities

Parking at the Bubbles lot is limited and fills fast. Wear sturdy shoes for the rocky, uneven trail and take care near the cliff edge by the boulder. If you want a touch more variety (and fewer people), add North Bubble or loop toward Jordan Pond.
