The Bubbles

Overview

Two rounded granite domes—North Bubble and South Bubble—rise above the north end of Jordan Pond. They’re classic Acadia: quick effort, outsized payoff, and a quirky geologic star in Bubble Rock.

Why go

• South Bubble serves up the signature view straight down Jordan Pond and a close look at Bubble Rock, a glacial erratic seemingly teetering on the edge.
• North Bubble is a touch quieter with sweeping vistas toward Eagle Lake and forested ridgelines.

The hike

Start from the Bubbles Divide Trailhead on Park Loop Road. Trails are well marked and mix shaded forest, stone steps, and open granite ledges. Expect short, steep pitches and some hands-on scrambling, especially on South Bubble. Many visitors tag both summits in a modest loop; stronger hikers often extend toward additional viewpoints to thin the crowds.

What makes it unique

Bubble Rock is the celebrity—a giant boulder hauled here by ancient ice and left perched near South Bubble’s rim. It’s one of the park’s most photographed geologic features and a fun spot for creative photos.

Crowds and logistics

This is a top hike, so the small lot fills quickly in peak season. Arrive early or consider the Island Explorer bus when it’s running. There are no services at the trailhead—bring water and snacks.

Conditions and safety

Granite ledges can be slick when wet, icy, or leaf-covered. Sturdy footwear matters. The scrambling sections are short but can feel exposed for some. In shoulder seasons, check current park conditions before you go.

Wildlife

Expect common songbirds and small mammals along the forested approach; keep voices low at overlooks if you’re hoping to spot raptors riding thermals.

Best time to visit

• Early morning: Easiest parking and calm air for mirror-like reflections of the domes across Jordan Pond (popular with photographers).
• Late afternoon: Warm side-lighting on the granite and fewer mid-day crowds.
• Weekdays are generally quieter than weekends in peak months.
