Overview

Tucked behind the Beehive, The Bowl is a small, glacial mountain pond ringed by forested slopes and pink granite. It feels like a natural amphitheater—calm water, reflections, and just enough shoreline nooks to linger without the Beehive crowds breathing down your neck.

Getting There

Reach it via the Bowl Trail from the Sand Beach/Behive trail area. If heights aren’t your thing, skip the iron-rung Beehive route and take the safer Bowl Trail instead. Expect a short, moderately challenging hike with rocky sections and a few ups and downs. There’s no parking or restrooms at the pond; use Sand Beach parking and facilities.

What You’ll See

A clear, tranquil pond at roughly mid-mountain, with views of the surrounding Beehive and Champlain ridges peeking through the trees. Boardwalk planks and short lakeside paths let you wander right at the water’s edge. In fall, the shoreline lights up with color, and reflections can be gorgeous on still days.

Swim Break

This is one of the rare freshwater spots here where swimming is allowed. The water can feel surprisingly pleasant on warm days. Watch footing—rocks can be slick—and give yourself time to hang out before heading back.

Wildlife

It’s a popular birding area, and the broader pond environment can draw a variety of woodland birds. Visitors also report frogs around the shore. Bald eagles have been spotted overhead on occasion.

Pair It With

Use The Bowl as a peaceful detour on Beehive, Gorham Mountain, or Champlain routes. Many hikers swing by for a break between bigger climbs.

Best Time to Visit

  • Early morning or late afternoon to dodge Beehive-area crowds.
  • Peak foliage amplifies the scenery; calm, overcast days are great for reflections.
  • Summer is ideal for a swim, but bring bug spray.

Know Before You Go

There are no services at the pond—no restrooms, water, or trash cans. Trails can be rocky, rooty, and slick after rain. Start from Sand Beach parking (arrive early in busy season), carry water and snacks, and pack out everything you bring.

Pros

  • Peaceful mountain pond where swimming is allowed
  • Quieter escape steps from the busy Beehive area
  • Boardwalks and benches along the shore

Cons

  • Sand Beach parking fills fast
  • Bugs can be intense in summer

Tips

  • Park at Sand Beach and start early; the lot fills quickly.
  • Take the Bowl Trail if you want to avoid the exposed Beehive rungs.
  • Bring bug spray in summer and watch for slick rocks near the water.
  • Pack swimwear and a towel—swimming is allowed at the pond.
