Pemetic Mountain West Face Trail

If you like your Acadia hikes steep, scrambly, and view-packed, the West Face of Pemetic delivers. Starting near Bubble Pond, this route rockets up rugged forest, boulder fields, and open granite slabs before topping out to sweeping summit views of Jordan Pond, Eagle Lake, Bubble Pond, and neighboring Penobscot and Sargent. It’s a classic “earn-your-views” ascent—strenuous, exposed up high, and absolutely scenic.

Plan on about 1.1 miles one way (roughly 2.2 miles out and back) with around 1,000 feet of elevation gain. The trail includes ledges, short ladder sections, and hands-on scrambling. It’s doable for experienced hikers who are comfortable with heights and granite slabs; it’s not a beginner route and can be slick when damp.

The terrain shifts quickly: lower down you’ll pass through typical Acadia spruce-fir forest; higher up it opens to bare granite and alpine-style vegetation. Those clean, glacially-sculpted Cadillac Mountain–granite slabs are what make the views—and the footing—so memorable. On a clear day, the summit panorama is wide open in every direction.

Best time to hike: late spring through fall is prime. Start early for easier parking and cooler temps; the granite bakes in sun and turns treacherous when wet. Fall colors add an extra layer of wow. The trail is technically open year-round, but snow and ice make the ledges and ladders hazardous—microspikes or crampons are strongly recommended in winter conditions.

Tips: wear real hiking boots with good traction and consider trekking poles for the descent. If you want variety, ascend the West Face and descend by a different ridge to make a loop. If ladders and exposure aren’t your thing, Pemetic’s South or North Ridge routes offer friendlier alternatives with great views.

Logistics: no permits needed for day hiking (standard park entry fees apply). Leashed dogs are allowed but the steep scrambles and ladders are tough for most pets; consider your dog’s ability and turn around if needed. Parking at Bubble Pond is limited—use the Island Explorer shuttle in peak season to skip the parking stress.
