The Organ

Overview

The Organ is a tall, narrow sandstone fin rising dramatically above the road in the Courthouse Towers area, framed by neighbors like Three Gossips, Sheep Rock, and Tower of Babel. Its silhouette really does resemble a pipe organ from certain angles, which is how it got its name.

What You’ll See

From the main road and nearby viewpoints you’ll get sweeping views of soaring fins and towers, with the La Sal Mountains on the eastern horizon. The Organ stands out for its vertical relief—about 500 feet of rock stacked in a slender wall—making it a favorite subject for quick roadside photos.

Geology Snapshot

Carved from Jurassic‑age Entrada Sandstone (Slick Rock Member over Dewey Bridge), The Organ formed as erosion whittled broad slabs into fins and then isolated towers. You’ll notice color variations in the sandstone typical of the area, shaped by groundwater altering iron content over time.

Photography

Light is everything here. Early morning and late afternoon bring warm tones and shadows that emphasize texture and height. The Courthouse Towers parking area and the La Sal Mountains Viewpoint offer excellent perspectives; the Park Avenue area also gives compelling angles without much walking.

Getting Around and Amenities

There’s no maintained trail to The Organ itself, and no facilities at the feature. Use nearby parking/viewpoints (Courthouse Towers, Park Avenue) for viewing and photos. Restrooms and other services are found at established trailheads and the visitor center; water is available at the visitor center and Devils Garden.

Wildlife

This high‑desert corridor often hosts ravens and swallows riding the thermals, plus lizards and small mammals typical of Arches’ open country. Scan the cliff faces and ledges while you’re lining up shots.

Fun Fact

The Organ and its Courthouse Towers neighbors made a cameo in the opening credits of Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade.

Best Time to Visit

Sunrise is the sweet spot for color and fewer people; late afternoon works well too. Midday brings the harshest light, the most heat, and the biggest crowds, especially in peak season. Aim for early or late in the day and weekdays if you can.
