Tower of Babel is the showpiece butte of the Courthouse Towers area—a sheer wall of Entrada Sandstone rising roughly 500 feet above the road and glowing red-orange when the light hits right. You don’t need a hike to enjoy it; it’s one of those pull-over-and-stare moments early on the scenic drive.

From roadside pullouts you’ll get a towering sandstone monolith framed by big desert sky, with neighbors like The Organ and Three Gossips nearby. It photographs well from multiple angles along the main road; pair it with the Courthouse Towers or Park Avenue viewpoints for wider context.

Geology in Plain English

This is Entrada Sandstone—Jurassic-age rock that erodes into tall, narrow fins and sheer faces. Over time, wind and water carved a solid fin into the stand-alone tower you see today. It’s classic Courthouse Towers geology: vertical, sculpted, and dramatic.

How to Visit

You can admire Tower of Babel right from designated pullouts along the main road. If you want more, the Park Avenue Trail is just down the way and drops into a cinematic canyon; the tower itself is still best appreciated from the roadside.

Golden hours are prime: warm light, deep shadows, and texture on the walls. After dark, photographers use it as a foreground for star-filled skies. Midday light is harsh and flattens the rock, so plan around that if photos are the goal.

Wildlife

It’s roadside desert habitat—you may spot lizards, ravens, or a soaring red‑tailed hawk. Early and late in the day are your best chances for activity.
