Pros & cons
PROS
- Partially paved start makes it accessible for many visitors
- Informative signs and a model add geology context without a ranger talk
- Sweeping La Sal and Windows views for almost zero effort
CONS
- Small parking lot fills fast during busy hours
- Full loop is not fully accessible due to steps and uneven rock
Dedicated lot directly off the main park road at Balanced Rock; small and often full. Restrooms and a picnic area are nearby across a short gravel road.
Very little shade—carry water and sun protection. The back side has uneven rock and steps; watch footing. Winter can bring icy patches. No pets. Climbing on the rock is prohibited.
Balanced Rock is the postcard you can stroll around. This tiny 0.3-mile loop (total) circles a 128-foot formation where Entrada Sandstone perches on a pedestal of Dewey Bridge mudstone. It’s quick, photogenic from every angle, and delivers a lot of scenery for almost no effort.
What to Expect
The loop starts flat and partially paved, then turns into packed dirt and rock with a few steps and uneven sections on the far side. Elevation change is minimal (under 50 feet), and most folks take 15–30 minutes, including photo stops. If you need a fully smooth surface, enjoy the paved out-and-back portion and skip the rougher segment.
Scenery and Geology
Walking the loop gives changing perspectives of the “balanced” boulder (it’s actually attached, not teetering). Interpretive signs explain the geology and history, including the nearby model and the story of “Chip Off the Old Block,” a smaller balanced rock that collapsed in the winter of 1975–76. Look up to the La Sal Mountains and across to the Windows area for classic red-rock vistas, especially in late-day light.
Accessibility and Family Friendliness
This is a crowd-pleaser for kids, seniors, and anyone wanting a leg-stretch without committing to a hike. The initial paved stretch is wheelchair and stroller friendly; the full loop is not due to steps and uneven surfaces. Pets aren’t allowed on the trail (service animals excepted).
Tips
Parking is right off the main park road and can fill quickly. Aim for early morning or late afternoon for easier parking, softer light, and cooler temps. There’s little shade—bring water, sunscreen, and a hat. Do not climb on the formation—it's prohibited.
Best Time to Hike
Year-round, with spring and fall offering the most comfortable temperatures. In summer, go early or late to dodge the heat and crowds. Winter can be lovely too—just watch for icy patches and cold winds.
