Balanced Rock

Balanced Rock is a 128-foot sandstone formation beside Arches Scenic Drive, 9.2 miles from the visitor center. You can see it from the road, then take a 0.3-mile loop around the base for closer, changing angles. Give the walk 15 to 30 minutes; it has about 35 feet of elevation change. The roadside view is enough if you're moving quickly, but the loop is the part that makes the rock's shape click. Parking is limited, so don't count on a long linger at the busiest times.

The trail starts flat and paved, passing close beside the rock and reaching a view toward The Windows and the La Sal Mountains. The rest of the circuit has steps, slopes and rocky, uneven ground, so don't assume the whole loop stays smooth. Climbing on Balanced Rock is prohibited. Dogs aren't allowed on the trail; service animals are permitted.

The rounded cap is Entrada Sandstone still attached to a pedestal of softer Dewey Bridge mudstone. That pedestal is eroding, so the formation is temporary on a geologic timescale; the name makes it sound more precarious than it is. Its smaller sibling, Chip-Off-the-Ol'-Block, collapsed in the winter of 1975–76. There's no need to guess when this one will follow: just notice how the cap and pedestal are still joined.

Sunset turns the sandstone deep red-orange. The park also points to Balanced Rock as a night-photography spot: it's far enough from Moab's lights, with nearby rock spires to use against the sky. Walk the loop for different foregrounds and angles; at night, leave some sky in the frame so the formation keeps its scale.

The separate Balanced Rock Picnic Area is west across the road, down a gravel spur. It has several picnic tables, a covered canopy and a vault toilet, with views over Salt Valley. Use that separate stop for a table or restroom break; those facilities aren't at the rock's own parking area.
