If the front-country hotspots feel too busy, Klondike Bluffs delivers the red-rock drama without the shoulder-to-shoulder crowds. This route climbs from Salt Valley into a maze of Entrada Sandstone fins and ledges, with the striking Marching Men off to your left and a big payoff at Tower Arch. Expect long views over Salt Valley toward the Book Cliffs and La Sal Mountains, and a landscape dotted with pinyon, juniper, cliffrose, and Mormon tea.
From the Klondike Bluffs parking area, you start with a fairly steep pull over a ridge, then thread rock ledges and soft, sandy sections en route to Tower Arch. The tread mixes slickrock with sand, and route-finding relies on cairns—pay attention at junctions and across open rock. It’s a moderately strenuous outing but short by park standards: plan for roughly 1.6–2.0 miles round-trip total to reach and enjoy Tower Arch.
Reach the Klondike Bluffs parking area via about 8 miles of dirt along Salt Valley Road. It’s typically passable in dry weather but can be rough and should be avoided after rain.
Spring and fall are ideal for comfortable temps and softer light on the fins and arch. Summer is doable only with an early start and abundant water—the route is exposed and can be dangerously hot by late morning. Winter can be quiet and beautiful but watch footing on icy slickrock.
If you want a short, moderately strenuous desert hike with big scenery and far fewer people, this is a strong pick. If you’re after quick roadside arches or well-marked, ultra-easy strolls, look elsewhere.
