Landscape Arch

Overview

Landscape Arch is the park’s ultra-skinny showpiece—a graceful 290-foot ribbon of Entrada sandstone that looks almost too delicate to be real. It’s the marquee stop in Devils Garden and one of the easiest big rewards in the park.

The Hike

From Devils Garden Trailhead, it’s about 0.8 miles one way (1.6 miles round-trip) on a well-graded, family-friendly path with gentle ups and downs. Two worthwhile detours—Tunnel Arch and Pine Tree Arch—branch off along the way, adding variety without much extra effort.

Why It’s Special

That improbable thinness is the whole magic. Rockfalls in the 1990s trimmed the span and prompted today’s fenced viewing area. You’ll view it from a signed overlook—close enough to appreciate the airy curve, far enough to stay safe.

Photography and Best Time to Visit

Arrive early to beat both heat and crowds; mornings are cooler and the trailhead parking is far saner before 8 am. The arch photographs well in soft light—sunrise and late-day light flatter the texture and shape. Expect heavy midday traffic in peak season.

Keep Exploring

Look up from the viewpoint to spot Partition Arch high on the northwest wall. If you continue past Landscape Arch, the route steepens onto slickrock toward Double O Arch; the Primitive Loop beyond is a more advanced adventure through sandstone fins and cracks.

Wildlife

Typical desert companions—lizards, ravens, hawks, and small mammals—are most active in the cool of early morning. Don’t expect much movement once the sun bakes the pavement.

Practical Notes

• The path beneath the span is closed due to rockfall hazard; the overlook offers the best view.
• Toilets are at the Devils Garden Trailhead; drinking water is available there spring through fall.
• Wear sturdy shoes, carry water and sun protection, and expect limited shade despite a few protected sections.
