Delicate Arch

Delicate Arch is a freestanding sandstone arch in an open slickrock bowl in Arches National Park. Its opening is 46 feet high and 32 feet wide, making it the park’s largest freestanding arch and its best-known landmark. Getting close takes a 3-mile round trip from Wolfe Ranch; allow 2 to 3 hours. The arch stays hidden until the final approach, so choose this for the close-up experience as well as the hike.

The trail climbs over open slickrock with no shade. It passes a historic cabin and a rock-art panel before the final climb. Near the end, a narrow ledge runs for about 200 yards. Follow the rock markers and cairns, and bring shoes with good traction. This is a strenuous route; if steep, exposed rock is uncomfortable, the Lower and Upper Delicate Arch Viewpoints offer distant views without reaching the arch.

The short walk from the Wolfe Ranch parking area to the cabin and panel is wheelchair accessible. The route beyond climbs steep, uneven rock. Dogs are not allowed on the trail; service animals are.

The arch can lose its scale in a close crop. Include the whole opening and a person on the slickrock for size; visitors often wait for a turn beneath it at busy times. Stay on the marked route while choosing a view.

The park’s Entrada Sandstone began as desert dunes. After layers folded and fractures opened, uplift and erosion exposed the rock; water and freeze-thaw gradually widened openings through sandstone fins. The same process keeps wearing arches away. Their openings grow until the stone eventually gives way, as Wall Arch did in 2008.

People from Zuni, Hopi, Ute and Paiute communities traveled and camped in this area for centuries, using local water, plants, game and stone. During the Wolfe family’s time at Salt Wash, Ute people also camped nearby and traded with the ranchers.

John Wesley Wolfe and his son Fred established a cattle ranch at Salt Wash in 1898. The cabin still standing was built in 1906 after Wolfe’s daughter Flora arrived with her family; its 17-by-15-foot room housed six people. Flora took one of the earliest photographs of Delicate Arch. The family left by 1910.

The arch was also called Cowboy’s Chaps, Old Maid’s Bloomers and Salt Wash Arch. “Delicate” appeared in a 1934 account that described the arch as especially finely carved. The name stayed, even as its outline continues to change.
