The Windows Loop Trail

This is the greatest-hits walk of the Windows Section—short, easy, and wildly scenic. In roughly 1.0–1.2 miles total (plan 30–60 minutes), you’ll stand beneath three of Arches’ marquee formations: North Window, South Window, and Turret Arch. Elevation gain is minimal (about 100–150 feet), but expect steps, uneven rock, and sandy stretches.

Route options

From the Windows Parking Area, follow the well-signed main path to Turret Arch and the Windows. Most folks tag the Windows and return the same way. Do yourself a favor and complete the full loop via the Primitive Trail behind South Window—it’s quieter, follows cairns across open desert, and gives great “behind-the-scenes” views before reconnecting at the start. The loop can be hiked in either direction.

What you’ll see

Up-close looks at the massive North and South Windows and the picturesque Turret Arch are the headliners. From along the loop, scan for sweeping red-rock vistas and named features like the Garden of Eden, Elephant Butte, and the Parade of Elephants. If you have time, Double Arch starts from the same parking area—adding it turns the outing into just over 2 miles total.

Trail feel and access

The first ~100 yards are flat, hard-packed, and barrier-free; after that, stone steps and uneven surfaces make it no longer wheelchair- or stroller-friendly. Wayfinding is straightforward on the main path; on the Primitive Loop, follow the cairns and stay on the established track.

Practical tips

This area is extremely popular and the shared Double Arch–Windows lot often fills early—arrive early for parking and lighter crowds. There’s very little shade; summer heat can be intense. Bring water, sun protection, and sturdy shoes. Restrooms and accessible parking are available at the trailhead. Pets aren’t allowed on park trails. No trail-specific permit is needed (standard park entry rules apply; check the official park page for any seasonal timed-entry requirements).

Best time to hike

Spring and fall are the sweet spot for temperatures. Summer is doable but hot—start early to beat both the heat and the tour-bus rush. Any time of day delivers big views; the Primitive Loop is your best bet if you want a quieter experience.
