Overview
This is the classic Moraine Lake panorama—the famed “$20 view” of turquoise water backed by the Valley of the Ten Peaks. A quick hop up the natural rock moraine delivers the most photographed scene in the park.
The Short Hike
Reach it via the Rockpile Trail: about 0.8 km round trip with ~30 m of gain, steps the whole way, and several spots to pause. Most people take 10–20 minutes to the top. Trails are well‑maintained, family‑friendly, and there are multiple nooks across the rockpile—don’t stop at the first overlook.
Why It’s Special
You’re standing on the glacier‑built “moraine” that gave the lake its name. From the top, the color pops most in summer as glacial silt refracts the light. Interpretive signs up top help you decode the peaks and valley in front of you.
Wildlife
You’ll often see chipmunks and pikas flicking between boulders. Birders can watch for Grey Jays, Osprey, and even White‑tailed Ptarmigan. Enjoy the show, but don’t feed wildlife.
Getting There & Crowds
This viewpoint is wildly popular. Personal vehicle access to Moraine Lake is restricted in season, so most visitors arrive by shuttle (Parks Canada or private sunrise operators), or by bike. Expect heavy crowds from mid‑morning through afternoon; lines and timed shuttle bookings are normal on busy days.
Photography Tips
Bring a wide‑angle lens to take in the whole basin. Explore the different ledges for fresh compositions; one side of the rockpile is typically quieter than the other. Sunrise is prized for soft alpenglow, while midday in summer brings the most electric turquoise.
