Lake Annette

Lake Annette is the peaceful antidote to the nearby zoo at Lake Louise and Moraine Lake. Starting from the Paradise Valley Trail, this out-and-back hike weaves through cool evergreen forest, crosses sturdy bridges over rushing Paradise Creek, and delivers you to a turquoise, glacial-fed lake tucked below the hulking north face of Mount Temple. Expect 7.1 miles total with roughly 3–4 hours of hiking for most people.

The approach is mostly forested—lodgepole pine, Engelmann spruce, and subalpine fir frame the path—so the big mountain drama comes in flashes at creek crossings and opens wide at the lake itself. That’s part of the charm: the walk is calm and woodsy, then suddenly you’re at a serene alpine bowl with classic Rockies scenery. If you still have gas in the tank, continue about 15 minutes beyond the lake to a local high point for broader valley and headwall views.

The trail is well-signed and well-maintained, with solid bridges that make creek crossings stress-free. It’s generally considered moderate thanks to steady but manageable grade and good footing. Families and dogs (on leash) do fine here, but remember this is prime bear habitat—carry bear spray and know how to use it. At times, Parks Canada imposes group-of-four restrictions in this area; be ready to link up at the trailhead if required.

Access is the trickiest part. Public vehicle access on Moraine Lake Road is restricted; plan ahead and book the shuttle to reach the Paradise Valley/Paradise Creek trailhead. There are toilets at the trailhead, but no services along the route. Bring layers, rain gear, snacks, and water—Alberta weather loves a plot twist.

Best time to hike: June through October, when the trail is typically clear. Snow lingers late into spring and can return early in fall. Aim for an early start for cooler temps, calmer winds on the lake, and easier shuttle logistics. If you’re chasing the biggest views with fewer people, earlier mornings are your friend.

Bottom line: Lake Annette is an underrated Banff gem—classic alpine scenery without the shoulder-to-shoulder crowds. If you want more nonstop views and don’t mind busier trails, the big-name lakes deliver. But for a quieter day with a lovely destination and a true Rockies vibe, this one punches above its weight.
