Castle Lookout is a moderate out-and-back with a 4.6-mile (7.4-kilometre) round trip from the Castle Lookout trailhead. Parks Canada lists 3.7 kilometres one way, 3 to 4 hours, and 520 metres of elevation gain. It is a steady forested climb on dirt and rocky sections, with switchbacks near the top. Most of the route stays among the trees, so this suits hikers who are happy to earn the view rather than collect one immediately.

The trail ends at the site of a former fire lookout. Banff built fire towers in the mid-20th century so spotters could find smoke, and the tower is gone now, but the view across the middle Bow Valley remains. As the trees thin, look back through the openings for wider views. At the lookout, include a little of the valley or Castle Mountain's layered cliffs in photos to give the landscape some scale.
