Sims Creek Trail

Sims Creek is a mellow, woodsy loop with classic Parkway vibes: shady creekside walking, rosebay rhododendron thickets, and a short meadow segment with a look toward Grandfather Mountain. It’s commonly paired with the adjacent Green Knob Trail to make a roughly 2.3-mile total loop, and you can start from either Sims Creek Overlook or Sims Pond Overlook (both at about MP 295.3).

Route snapshot

Expect natural singletrack with roots, rocks, and a few wet spots. Much of the route parallels Sims Creek, including a walk beneath the Parkway at the Sims Creek viaduct, and a small meadow where the Grandfather view opens briefly. The loop has modest elevation changes with a few short, steep pitches—more engaging than flat, but not a grind. Figure about 1.25–2 hours at a relaxed pace for the full loop.

What you’ll see

• Lush rhododendron (especially late June–early July) and mixed hardwood forest.
• Creek ambience throughout, plus the distinctive experience of passing under the Parkway bridge.
• A brief pastoral/meadow feel and a framed glimpse of Grandfather Mountain—best in the morning for light.
• In autumn, the Sims Creek bridge area pops with color along the banks.

Trail notes

The tread can be slick after rain and there are multiple creek crossings—waterproof footwear pays off. Some stretches are rocky and rooty. There are steps dropping directly from the Sims Creek Overlook into the trail. Crowds are usually lighter than on the Parkway’s headline hikes, and there are no facilities or picnic tables on the loop.

Best time to hike

• Spring/early summer for fresh greens and rhododendron bloom (late June–early July).
• Mid‑October for standout fall color along the creek.
• Morning light favors the meadow/Grandfather view. The trail is generally hikeable year‑round except during heavy snow/ice.

Tips

• For easier climbs and nicer morning views, many hike it clockwise starting from Sims Pond.
• Bring a simple map—junctions with Green Knob are straightforward but it’s nice to have.
• Leashed dogs are allowed; the varied terrain and creek access suit athletic pups.

If you’re after a quiet, varied loop with water, woods, and a touch of scenery—but not a big summit payoff—this one’s a pleasantly underrated Parkway stroll.
