Governor Head Lookout Track

Overview

A short, rewarding coastal stroll from Murrays Beach car park to a clifftop lookout with sweeping views over Jervis Bay and Bowen Island. Expect an easy 2.3 km/1.4 mi return walk with about 79 m of gentle elevation gain. Most walkers take 30–60 minutes total, making this a perfect add‑on to beach time at Murrays.

Route

From the Murrays Beach car park (toilets available), follow the signed path toward the beach, then pick up the track behind the sand to Governors Head. It’s a straightforward out‑and‑back on a formed path through coastal bush. At the headland, keep well back from the cliff edges as you soak up the panorama, then return the same way.

What you’ll see

Big bay vistas, turquoise water, and a front‑row view of Bowen Island—home to a thriving little penguin colony, visible from the mainland only. Along the way, scan the coastal heath for wallabies and birdlife like rainbow lorikeets; out on the water you may spot dolphins and, in season, whales.

Tips and expectations

This is an easy family‑friendly walk, but the lookout sits atop sea cliffs—keep children close and stay on the marked path. Interpretive signs add context on the area’s nature and culture. Mobile reception can be patchy, so don’t rely on it for navigation. Bring your own water and sun protection; there’s no shade at the lookout.

Best time to hike

Go early or late for softer light and calmer vibes, then cool off at Murrays Beach right at the trailhead. Wind and sun exposure feel stronger on the headland; if conditions look rough, save the viewpoint for a clearer window.
