Uath Lochans Picnic Area

Overview

Tucked into Glen Feshie, Uath Lochans Picnic Area sits beside a cluster of small, mirror‑calm lochans in ancient Scots pine woodland. It’s quiet, restorative, and feels a bit like you’ve stumbled onto a secret—perfect for an unhurried picnic before a short walk.

What You’ll See

Expect classic Cairngorms textures: tall pines, moss-draped rocks, open water and wetland edges. From higher viewpoints the lochans look like little jewels scattered between the trees, and one main viewpoint even has a bench and a big erratic boulder—ideal for a snack and photos.

Trails From Here

This is the trailhead for the Uath Lochans loops (including the circuit to Farleitter Crag for big views over Strathspey and Glen Feshie). Surfaces are a mix of gravel and boardwalk, with gentle gradients and a few short, steeper pulls. Figure on roughly 4 km and 1–1.5 hours for the main loop. After rain, some sections turn muddy—bring proper shoes.

Wildlife

Red squirrels are regularly seen flitting through the pines, and in summer the lochans live up to their “Dragonfly Lochans” nickname. Keep an eye out for frogs along the damp paths and other wetland life.

Practicalities

There’s a small, free car park right by the lochans and a designated picnic area. No toilets, shops, or cafés here—the nearest facilities are in Kincraig and nearby villages—so come self‑sufficient. No public transport serves the car park. Camping isn’t allowed in the car park area. If you’re tempted by a dip, wild swimming does occur here, but it’s remote, cold, and unlifeguarded—only for confident, prepared swimmers.

Getting There

Drive up the west side of Glen Feshie and watch for the sign for Uath Lochans; the car park and lochside picnic area are about 200 m beyond the turn. From the far side of the car park, pick up the path that curves around the water to start exploring.

Best Time to Visit

Summer is prime for dragonflies and a relaxed picnic by the water. The small car park can fill, so earlier in the day is easier. After wet spells, expect muddier trails; in drier weather, the boardwalks make for an easy family-friendly loop.
