Uath Lochans Eagle's View Trail

Overview

This is the classic short loop at Uath Lochans: a gentle forest-and-lochside wander with a punchy little climb to the “Eagle’s View” on Farleitter Crag. It’s about 2.5 miles (4 km) total for the circuit, using signed paths and tracks around the lochans before heading up to the viewpoint and back down to rejoin the waterside paths.

What You’ll See

Right from the car park you’re among tranquil, mirror-like lochans fringed by Scots pine and birch. Boardwalk sections keep your feet dry in boggier pockets, and reflections on calm days are superb for photos. The short, steep pull to Eagle’s View rewards you with a sweeping panorama over the Uath Lochans, with wider views toward the Insh Marshes, the River Spey, and distant Cairngorm and Monadhliath hills.

Trail Experience

Underfoot it’s mostly easy-going forest paths and tracks with a few boardwalks; the ascent to Eagle’s View is steeper, rougher, and can be stepped or rooty. Waymarking is present, but there’s a web of tracks in the woods—loading a GPX or having a local map helps keep you on the intended loop. Families do this walk often; just note the viewpoint climb isn’t stroller- or wheelchair-friendly.

Wildlife & Nature

This is classic Caledonian forest habitat—watch and listen for red squirrels and woodland birds, with buzzards overhead and ospreys in summer. Around the lochans, expect dragonflies in warmer months. The lochans themselves are kettle-hole remnants of the last Ice Age, dotting gently undulating terrain beneath old pines.

Tips & Tricks

• Bring insect repellent in late spring and summer; midges like the still water.
• For navigation, a printed map or GPX is handy given the maze of tracks (OL56 Badenoch & Aviemore is the local sheet).
• There’s a convenient lochside picnic area near the car park—great for pre- or post-hike snacks.
• Dogs are welcome; keep them close and on lead where needed, especially near wildlife and during nesting/lambing.

Best Time to Hike

This loop works year-round. Spring and summer bring lush greens and active birdlife; autumn adds golden birch and russet heath; winter can be beautifully quiet with crisp vistas—but take care on icy paths and boardwalks. Early or late in the day gives the calmest water for reflections and softest light for the viewpoint.

Comparable Option

If you want to stretch the legs, there’s a longer linking route from Feshiebridge/Loch Insh that also visits Uath Lochans, but the core Eagle’s View loop is the concentrated highlight.
