Signed Uath Lochans car park off the minor road west of Glen Feshie; look for the Forestry sign. The trail starts beside a lochside picnic area.
Short, steep ascent to Farleitter Crag with steps and uneven footing; can be icy in winter and muddy after rain. Midges common in summer near the lochans.
Overview
A Western Cairngorms classic, this short loop strings together mirror‑calm lochans, airy Scots pine and birch woodland, and a quick punch up to Farleitter Crag for wide‑angle views over the Spey Valley and Insh Marshes. It’s the kind of outing that feels high‑reward without high effort.
Route and Terrain
Start from the signed Uath Lochans car park by the lochside picnic area. Waymarked paths lead straight from the parking, curving around the water before undulating through forest. The circuit totals about 3 miles (loop, total distance), with mostly good paths and tracks underfoot. Expect a short, steeper burst on the ascent to Farleitter Crag; elsewhere the going is easy‑moderate. Surfaces vary from compacted earth and gravel to occasional boardwalks near boggier patches, plus steps on the crag section.
Scenery and Wildlife
The lochans are the stars—often glassy and photogenic—framed by Caledonian pine. From Farleitter Crag, you’ll nab a big‑sky outlook to the surrounding straths and Cairngorm peaks. Watch and listen for woodland life; Red Squirrels are regularly seen, and Pine Martens and a variety of birds haunt the trees. Spring and summer add wildflowers to the mix.
Practicalities
This is a well‑signed, family‑friendly loop, but it’s not a stroller or wheelchair route due to roots, steps, and uneven ground. Dogs are welcome; keep them close around wildlife and near the water. There are no toilets at the trailhead. If you want to extend the day, a yellow‑waymarked path links from the Feshiebridge “sculpture car park” up toward the Uath Lochans and on toward Loch Insh.
Best Time to Hike
Year‑round is fine. Spring and summer bring lush greens, wildflowers, and lively wildlife activity. Autumn ramps up the golds and reflections on the lochans—superb for photography. Winter can be beautiful and quiet, but the crag ascent can turn icy; traction and care are wise. For photography, aim for early or late light when the lochans are most reflective. Midges can be bothersome on warm, still summer days near the water—pack repellent.
Bottom Line
Short, scenic, and varied. If you like tranquil water, classic pinewoods, and a viewpoint that punches above its weight, this loop earns a spot on your Cairngorms list.
