Kindrochit Castle

Kindrochit Castle is a modest medieval ruin in central Braemar, beside Clunie Water. Only fragments of the castle survive, so come for a short history stop rather than a walk through an intact fortress. A few minutes is enough to look around.

The cleared site leaves low stretches of stonework and the footprint of a later tower exposed. For a photo, get close enough to include the rectangular openings and turf-covered wall tops; a wide view from the road makes the remains look smaller than they are.

Kindrochit mattered for its position as much as its buildings. It watched routes through the Cairngorms, near the crossing points around Clunie Water and the Mounth. Robert II used the castle as a royal residence and issued charters here.

The present castle is best tied to the late 14th century, though an earlier stronghold here is possible and uncertain. In 1390 Robert II licensed Sir Malcolm Drummond to build a tower or fortalice at Kindrochit. Drummond was later kidnapped while overseeing work and died in captivity around 1402; who was responsible is uncertain.

Excavations in the 1920s recovered the Kindrochit Brooch, a tangible link to the medieval site. The ruins were later consolidated. A familiar story says plague trapped the occupants and cannons destroyed the castle, but the site interpretation presents this as a legend, not an established account of the ruin’s end.
