Lochnagar Circuit via Meikle Pap

Overview

This is a committing, high‑reward mountain loop that starts at the Spittal of Glen Muick car park and climbs via the bealach beside Meikle Pap to reach Lochnagar’s crest and true summit, Cac Càrn Beag. Expect huge granite architecture, a classic viewpoint straight into Lochnagar’s great corrie, and a scenic finish by Loch Muick if you descend via the Glas Allt.

Distance and Route Options

The standard circuit via Meikle Pap and the Glas Allt is about 11.5 miles total. A longer, commonly walked variant that extends the lochside return can reach roughly 18.2 miles. Either way, this is a full‑day outing with steep, rocky sections and sustained ascent/descents.

What You’ll See

From early woodland and estate tracks you break onto open moor and bouldery ground. A short detour to the top of Meikle Pap serves up the iconic view down into Lochnagar’s vast northern corrie and the dark lochan cradled below. The ascent continues up the well‑built “Ladder” through boulders to the plateau, then along the rim to Cac Càrn Beag for sweeping views over Deeside and the Cairngorms. Many hikers complete the loop by descending beside the Glas Allt and its waterfalls to Loch Muick, then follow the lochside track back. Keep an eye out for roe deer and red stags lower on the route. Geology fans get textbook Cairngorms granite—towering cliffs, glacial corrie walls, and endless boulders. There’s also a small memorial near the Meikle Pap bealach, and the lochside section passes the area associated with Queen Victoria at Glas‑allt‑Shiel.

Difficulty and Hazards

This circuit is challenging and best for experienced hikers. The “Ladder” is steep and rocky but on a clear, constructed path; the summit area has boulders and can be confusing in mist. Navigation on the plateau is serious in poor visibility, and the mountain is exposed to rapid weather changes. In winter, this becomes a mountaineering day requiring proper skills and equipment.

Logistics and Parking

Start and finish at the large pay‑and‑display car park at Spittal of Glen Muick at the end of the public road up Glen Muick. Arrive early in summer—spaces fill fast. Bring exact change for parking. Basic toilets are typically available at the car park.

Best Time to Hike

April through September offers the most reliable footing and access, though weather can still be wild. For photography, the corrie looks great with angled light in early morning or late afternoon from the Meikle Pap side; an early start also helps you enjoy the viewpoint before the crowds and secures parking. Weekends are busiest.

Tips

• Make the short detour onto Meikle Pap for the best corrie panorama.
• If clag rolls in, take careful bearings across the plateau; cairns and paths can be misleading in mist.
• Poles help on the steep, rocky “Ladder” and on the rough Glas Allt descent.
• Dogs are allowed under access rights—keep them very close, especially near ground‑nesting birds, deer, and during stalking.
