Loch Muick

Loch Muick is a mountain-ringed freshwater loch on Balmoral Estate in the eastern Cairngorms, reached by the public road up Glen Muick to Spittal. Do the loop for the full shore experience: it is 12.5 km, about 3–3.5 hours, with roughly 170 m of ascent. The climb is modest, but narrow, rocky and sometimes boggy sections around the shore make this a longer, rougher walk than the elevation suggests. At the start you’ll find charged parking, a small visitor centre and public toilets; public transport doesn’t reach the start.

The circuit crosses the River Muick beside picnic tables, passes the buildings at Allt-na-guibhsaich and reaches the woodland around Glas-allt Shiel. Farther on, sandy patches give way to a narrower path beside heather before tracks lead back to Spittal. The view changes as you circle the water, with steep hills rising around the loch and Broad Cairn above its head.

A steep optional path behind Glas-allt Shiel climbs to Glas Allt Falls. Allow about an extra hour; the falls are especially worthwhile after heavy rain. It turns a full circuit into a longer outing, so leave it out if you want to keep the walk more manageable.

Glas-allt Shiel is a hunting lodge built for Queen Victoria in 1868. After Prince Albert died, she used it as a retreat, and it became known as the Widow’s House. The lodge sits on the quieter, wooded side of the loch, a striking change from the open shoreline.

The nearby Capel Mounth track once carried cattle to markets in the lowlands. It now continues as a long-distance walking route toward Glen Clova, so the hills around Muick have been a passage through the Cairngorms as well as a destination.

Red deer are often seen on the surrounding hills. For a photo, stop along the shore and frame the water with the steep slopes beyond; the walk gives you more varied foregrounds than one fixed viewpoint.
