Overview

Benjie’s Lake is a short, easy out-and-back across the Cape Breton highlands to a quiet lakeshore. At just about 1.9 miles total, most hikers finish in 30–60 minutes; allow up to 1–1.5 hours if you meander or stop for wildlife. The grade is gentle and the path is well groomed, making this a low-commitment add-on to a Cabot Trail day.

What You’ll See

The route starts on the plateau at the top of French Mountain and crosses wet barrens and spruce–fir forest on gravel path and boardwalks. Those boardwalks protect fragile vegetation and keep your feet out of the worst puddles, but expect some muddy patches after rain. The turnaround is Benjie’s Lake—calm water framed by boreal flora. Moose are often spotted right at the lake; they’re never guaranteed, but this is one of the better quick bets in the park, especially early.

Trail Vibe and Who It’s For

This is a peaceful, family-friendly leg-stretcher rather than a big-view epic. If you’re chasing dramatic ocean cliffs, you’ll get more wow on longer routes elsewhere in the park. If you want an easy walk with wildlife potential and a sense of the highland ecosystem, this is perfect.

Best Time to Hike

Early morning is your best chance for moose and softer light on the lake. Summer and fall are the most popular seasons. Weather on the plateau can swing quickly—bring a layer even on warm days. In peak season, the small lot can fill; arriving early helps.

Know Before You Go

A valid park pass is required. Pets are allowed but must stay leashed. Stay on designated paths and boardwalks to protect the barrens and for your own footing. Drones are not permitted. Cell service can be unreliable, so don’t depend on your phone.

Comparable Options

Want bigger coastal views and a longer outing? Consider the Skyline Trail, which is longer and rated more challenging than this quick lake walk.

Pros

  • High chance of moose sightings right at the lakeshore if you go early
  • Boardwalks carry you over fragile wet barrens while keeping feet mostly dry

Cons

  • Short and lacks the dramatic ocean vistas found elsewhere in the park
  • Can be muddy and buggy despite boardwalk sections

Parking

Modest lot at the trailhead on the Cabot Trail at the top of French Mountain; a park pass is required.

Caution

Rapid weather changes on the plateau; wet and muddy sections; stay on boardwalks; give moose plenty of space; drones are prohibited; cell service may be unreliable.
