A gentle cliff‑top stroll with a grand finale: wide boardwalks stepping down to platforms perched above the Gulf of St. Lawrence. Set near the summit of French Mountain on the Cabot Trail, this is the park’s crowd‑pleaser for sweeping ocean-and-switchback views. Expect wind and big sky.

Route options and difficulty

You’ve got two choices: a 6.5 km/4 mi out‑and‑back to the famous headland, or an 8.2 km/5.1 mi loop (both distances are total). The path is mostly level gravel with the lookout reached by a long boardwalk and stairs (roughly 275 steps). Overall it’s easy, but the stair section can feel moderate for knees. Elevation on the route ranges roughly 290–405 m.

What you’ll see

From the viewing decks, watch the Cabot Trail ribbon down the mountainside and scan the Gulf for whales. Inland stretches cross meadows and stunted boreal forest that shelter moose, with bald eagles often riding the thermals along the cliffs.

Best times to hike

This trail is slammed mid‑day. Peak crowding typically runs 9:30 a.m.–4:00 p.m. (especially 11 a.m.–3 p.m. in peak season). Go early or aim for golden hour near sunset for softer light, thinner crowds, and your best chance at wildlife and whale spotting. Bring a layer—headland winds can be fierce—and a headlamp if you’ll finish near dusk.

Logistics and rules

There’s a designated parking lot at the trailhead; it fills quickly and access can be temporarily closed when at capacity, so have a Plan B. Do not stop on the Cabot Trail or use emergency pullouts, and note that pedestrian access along the highway between nearby look‑offs is prohibited. A valid park pass is required. Stay on the boardwalk and marked trail to protect fragile headland plants and for safety on the steep cliffs. Pets, bicycles, and drones are not permitted here. Washrooms are at the trailhead, and you may find a porta‑potty along the route.

Wildlife and safety

Moose, black bears, bald eagles, and coyotes live here; offshore, minke and humpback whales are possible from the decks. Keep a respectful distance and never feed wildlife. High winds, steep drop‑offs, and the long stair section at the lookout are the main hazards—hold onto hats and supervise kids on the platforms.
