Corney Brook Trail

Overview

A mellow forest ramble that follows Corney Brook through Acadian hardwoods to a small waterfall, Corney Brook Trail is a straightforward out‑and‑back well suited to most hikers. It’s 6.5 km/4.0 miles total (return), typically taking about 2 hours. Locally the brook is called Rivière à Lazare, and the hike finishes in a tight “box river canyon” with the falls as the turnaround point.

The Route

Start across from Corney Brook Campground on the Cabot Trail. The tread is mostly gravel with some rocky, uneven stretches and short cliffy edges near the beginning along the river—keep kids and dogs close here. You’ll cross a couple of small bridges, pass frequent kilometer markers, and meander upstream in deep shade until the waterfall comes into view. Elevation ranges roughly 30–170 m, so expect gentle grades with a few short hills. This is not a loop; you’ll return the way you came.

Difficulty and Pace

Rated Easy. Most hikers will cruise this in 1.5–2 hours, but the rocky footing can slow the pace. Sturdy footwear is smart. The setting feels pleasantly secluded compared to some of the park’s headliners, and the box‑canyon finale gives the walk a satisfying “destination.”

Best Time to Hike

The maintained season runs roughly mid‑May to mid‑October. Off‑season, the trail isn’t maintained but is often used for snowshoeing when conditions allow. The waterfall shows better flow after rain. Shade makes this a good choice on warm, sunny days and a quiet alternative when the Skyline Trail is busy.

Logistics and Tips

• Trailhead parking is limited at the campground across the road; arrive early in peak season. There are no services at the trailhead—use the campground to top up water and for restrooms.
• Pets are allowed on leash. A valid Parks Canada pass is required for park access, and recreational drones are prohibited. Cell service is unreliable to none in this valley.

Wildlife

Watch for snowshoe hare, moose sign, and a variety of forest birds along the brook.
