Bentonite Hills is the park’s most Mars-like scene: rounded, banded clay mounds painted in reds, browns, purples, grays, and greens. It’s a quick, scenic stop along the Cathedral Valley/Hartnet Road drive, best for soaking in the surreal colors and textures from the roadside rather than hiking deep into the formations.
These hills are made of bentonite clay (part of the Brushy Basin member of the Morrison Formation), derived from ancient volcanic ash. The clay is fragile when dry and turns slick, gummy, and tire-swallowing when wet. Repeated wet–dry cycles create that popcorn-like surface texture and the soft, rolling shapes that look straight out of a rover photo.
There are no formal trails here, and the surface scars easily. Enjoy the views from the road and, if you must step out, keep to durable, previously disturbed areas or wash bottoms. Leave no trace and absolutely do not drive off-road—footprints and tire tracks can last for years.
Reaching the area involves rough dirt roads where a high-clearance vehicle is strongly recommended. After rain, the bentonite turns to glue; the route may be impassable. Depending on your approach, you may encounter a water crossing—conditions vary, so check before you go and time your visit for dry weather.
The colors are naturally muted and subtle (don’t expect the hyper-saturated tones you see online). Low-angle light at sunrise or late afternoon reveals the banding and contours best. Overcast light can also be excellent for bringing out color without harsh glare.
This is a sparse, arid landscape with minimal vegetation, so wildlife sightings are limited; come for geology and big-sky vistas, not critter viewing.
The clay here is extraordinarily delicate. Stay on the road, keep footsteps to already disturbed areas, and avoid visiting when wet. Pack everything you need—there are no restrooms, water, gas, or services on site.
Come in dry conditions. For photos, shoot at sunrise or late afternoon for the most texture and color. Crowds are typically minimal at all times thanks to the remote location.
