Overview
Painted Cave on the north shore of Santa Cruz Island is a marquee sea cave—more than 1,200 feet deep with an entrance over 130 feet high. The name comes from its naturally “painted” walls: vivid reds and oranges from iron, greens from algae and plants, purples from intertidal algae, and whites from mineral deposits. It’s an on-the-water sight, not a place you step ashore.
If the ocean cooperates, absolutely. The scale and natural color make this one of the most memorable quick stops on the water—remote, raw, and different from anything on land.

Expect a towering, cathedral-like entrance and a deep, echoing interior that gets pitch-black quickly. On calm days, being inside the first chamber is a goosebump moment—just the sound of water and wildlife. The colorful streaks along the walls are the star of the show, especially near the entrance where light reaches them.
Sea lions commonly haul out on nearby rocks or swim the entrance, and seabirds frequent the cliffs. On crossings to and from the cave, it’s not unusual for boats to encounter dolphins or, in season, whales.
Everything here is weather- and swell-dependent. Operators decide on approach day-of. Even scheduled cave stops can be shortened or skipped if the ocean is up. Expect an open-ocean ride; time at the cave itself is typically brief before the boat continues the route.
Dress in layers for wind and spray. Bring waterproof protection for cameras and phones—spray is part of the fun. Low light inside the entrance favors fast lenses and image stabilization. If paddling with a guided kayak group, only strong, experienced kayakers should consider edging into the cave due to swells, surge, and darkness.
